QuickTime and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture

It took some time to nail this, I hope this information helps, please spread the word if it does.

You know the drill, your client has provided material in a bastard Word document produced on a Mac and you are using a PC. Instead of beautiful pictures you see a box containing the words "QuickTime and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture", you can't even highlight the text and paste it into Google.

Here is the helpful advise from Microsoft on their help forum:

Most people don't seem to have any problem opening MacWord docs in WinWord.

In other words: "We are the Gods of software, you insects are not worthy"... nice.

Alternatively, here's a way to get round it if you have enough coffee:

  • Install 7-Zip for Windows http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
  • If it is not already cluttering up your machine, install QuickTime viewer.
  • Open the bastard Word document in Word and Save As... HTML.
  • There will now be a folder with the same name as the bastard Word document, in it you should find images saved with the file extension .pcz.
  • Use 7-Zip to extract the image file from each .pcz file
  • There will now be another folder containing the image file, you may need to give it an extension, try .tif .tiff or .pict
  • Open the QuickTime Picture Viewer and open the new picture file.
  • If you have got this far then select export and save it as something you can use.

There you have it. It may be quicker to invent a time machine, nip back to 1512 and get Michelangelo to knock up an original though.
